Abstract:
The excavations conducted by our Ephorate in Halkidiki this year chiefly involved three archaeological sites, at Ierissos, Stratoni, and Ouranoupoli. The excavation of the cemetery of Acanthus was enriched by the investigation of two more plots, which yielded some 650 graves from the Archaic period to the Imperial era of the Roman period. The number of human remain stotalled 7,839, while the finds numbered tens of thousands. The majority of the graves were occupied by child burials, often lavishly supplied with grave goods. Some particularly interesting finds include teases of two funerary monuments, at least one larnax of the Clazomenaean type, and human remains with double iron shackles on the legs. At Stratoni, in view of building work that was about to begin, part of aRoman forum was located in block 7 in the new extension of the village. The architectural remains uncovered so far comprise at least 9 rooms arranged around a rectangular courtyard with a built stone well in the Centre. The whole complex covered an area of 29.8x2.3 m and was in use from the 1stto the 4th c. AD. During land-levelling work at Kokkinohorafo, in the agricultural area of Ouranoupoli, a built cist grave was found under a low heap of stones. The grave goods consisted of a clay oil lamp and a bronze coin which dates the burial to the 3rd quarter of the 3rd c. BC.
