Abstract:
This year we continued the excavation at the sanctuary in the area of ancient Sane and Ouranopolis in Chalcidice. Two sectors were investigated: a) the Archaic oikos which was discovered in 1990 and b) the area southeast from the oikos, where trial trenches carried out in 1990 yielded a group of Hellenistic walls. In the oikos we continued the investigation of the destruction layer of the northern part of the building and the floor in the interior. However, in 1993 we concentrated on the research of the area southeast from the oikos. Part of a big building (dim. of the excavated part 12.45x10.74), a thick wall with east-west orientation and other buildings between them were discovered there. The new building probably consists of more than one rooms, however, thewestern room was discovered this year. It is equipped with three entrances at the three walls, the western, the southern and the eastern. The eastern entrance was monumental, since it was equipped with a big marble threshold. The investigation of the eastern wall and threshold, out from the building, yielded three bases and two marble heads by them. One is the head of a young girl and the second is a male head equipped with holes for the attachment forays made of a different material which did not survive and a pyramidal device at the top. This head is interpreted as Helios. The pyramidal device recalls the figure on the coins of Ouranopolis which has been interpreted as Aphrodite Ourania. Close examination of the figure and its comparison with figures of Aphrodite on coins of Aphrodisias and other cities of Asia Minor suggest that the interpretation as Aphrodite Ourania has to be reconsidered
