Some thoughts on the analemmata and the parodoi of the ancient thetre at Philippi

Abstract:
In view of the need to conduct a survey for the consolidation and partial replacement of the E analemma of the Philippi theatre, an investigation was carried out to ascertain its mode of construction and the reasons for its destruction. The analemma's Hellenistic phase consists of two walls, the outer one built in opus isodomum, the blocks slightly irregular in height, and the inner one with polygonal masonry. The two walls are connected by long ashlars with finer ubble stones in the spaces between them. Behind the analemma is a rubble filling of large and small irregular stones positioned with spaces between them to avoid the build-up of great loads. Despite the careful construction of the analemma, statical problems arose as early as the Roman period. These were resolved, in the course of radical renovations which transformed the theatre, by the construction of two supporting arches, which transferred some of the load to the nearby city wall, and vaulted structures over the parodoi. The present form of the theatre at the site of the E parodos is due to dilapidation, owing to its having been abandoned from the 4th to the early20th c. A large number of ashlars from the E analemma and five pairs of voussoirs from the large supporting arch have been identified and can be restored totheir proper places. Prior to this, however, the earth fill must be secured torelieve the analemma. It is proposed that this be done by means of concrete injections in conjunction with metal bars, a method that is used to secure collapsing rock faces. Though these interventions come into the category of consolidation work or small-scale restoration, they will help to improve the image and the function of the theatre
