A Roman house in Limenas, Thasos

The Yovanios plot is on the W side of the Acropolis, SW of the Odeion. The area is known to have been a Roman district. Part of the atrium of a Roman house was discovered, together with part of the walls of the E wing. At a greater depth were found walls belonging to an early Hellenistic building. Two construction phases were detected in the atrium, both dating to the Roman period. The first phase involves the paved marble floor, the marble stylobate, and the marble bases of the, probably timber, columns, and dates to the Imperial period (2nd c. AD). In the second phase the stylobate was used as the foundation for a wall and the marble bases of the columns were walled up, thus creating a small structure of uncertain purpose (2nd half of the 3rd c. -early 4th c.). The movable finds included coins and numerous sherds from unpainted and black-painted wares. The extension of the investigation to the neighbouring plots and the complete uncovering of the atrium and the house will provide important information about private dwellings in the Roman period
