Excavation at Mantal Panagia of Samothrace in 1993
Abstract:
In south-central Samothrace, ca. 2 km to the north of the village Profetes Elias, between elevations 370 and 390 m and ca. 250 m NW of a chapel called Mandai’ Panagia, a sanctuary probably of a female deity was known from rich surface material since 1893. The surface finds include «Thracian» pottery, bronze fibulae, female terracotta and marble figurines, Attic, Corinthian and eastern workshops pottery. Besides the rich but fragmentary material, dating from the 8th century B.C. to the 2nd century A.D., trial excavations uncovered rectangular area of uncertain date and a small single-aisled Middle Byzantine chapel. To the east of the apse of the latter, the apse of a larger church has been located, perhaps an Early Christian basilica. The investigation of the site is at a very early stage and the data at our disposal are limited, for us to draw any firm conclusions both for the sanctuary itself and for its significance on a island with such a strong religious life
