The Basilica of Aghioi Apostoloi by the Mikri Prespa lake
Aghioi Apostoloi Church is located at the southwestern part of the settlement on the island of Aghios Achilleios of the Mikri Prespa lake by the frontiers with Albania. A few building remains on the steep slope of a hill were only observed. S. Pelekanidis had studied this monument in the past (bibliography, footnotes 14, 15).The dimensions of the interior of the basilica with three naves are 5.70-6x6.20-6.30 m. The dimensions of the narthex are 1.70x6 m. The floor of the small basilica is covered with rectangular marble slabs from the cemetery of the ancient Macedonian city Lyka, as in the case of the pavement of the neighbouring basilica of Aghios Achilleios. The church was probably built on the remains of an ancient temple whose architectural members were used as building material of the new structure; some are seen by the base of the outer side of the wall. The excavation yielded the U-shaped apse of the church and a couple of columns, between the two couples of pillars, with Ionic bases and cauldron-shaped capitals. Based on the similarities of the proportions and the building details of the interior with a category of monuments of the same type, scattered in a huge area from Trapezous to Kastoria and from Preslava and Pliska toArta, we have suggested that the church was probably built in the 10th century A.D.
