Abstract:
The presentation of the monuments related to the worship of Zeus Hypsistos from Western Macedonia (Bottiaia, Almopia, Pieria, Elimeia, Eordaia, Orestis and Tymphaia) is part of a wider study on Zeus as a weather-deity in Thessaly and Macedonia. His name implies a god of sky and clear day, a god of the seasons and time related to the weather phenomena. The worship of Zeus Hypsistos in ancient Bottiaia is recorded at Edessa, Petria of Skydra, Mieza, Patrida of Véroia, Véroia, Kyrro, Anydro of Giannitsa, Agrosykia and Eidomene. Evidence is also provided by Garephi of ancient Almopia, Pydna of Pieria,Kozane, Aiane, Ano Kome and Velvedo of ancient Elimeia, Akrine, Anatoliko and Pontokome of ancient Eordaia, Choregos Boiou and Aghia Anna of Kozane in ancient Orestis, and finally, by Syndendro of Grevena of ancient Tymphaia. Seven more votive offerings related to the cult of the god were found in the prefect of Kozane. Since some of those monuments are the earliest known, it is highly possible the worship of Zeus Hypsistos started from this area and spread afterwards in many areas of the ancient Greek and Roman world. The great number of the inscriptions, monuments and sanctuaries of Zeus Hypsistos in Macedonia indicate an originally Macedonian cult.
