Abstract:
The aim of the investigation at the excavated southwestern part of the sanctuary in1991 was to shed light on certain details of the earlier phases of the sanctuary and to locate its western boundary during the first phase. The investigation started from this area because the earliest evidence on cult was preserved there: two small temples in the type of the megaron and two cult circular shafts southeast from the southern temple. The finds from the two temples date to the 5th and early 4th centuries B.C.: pottery, lampls and terracotta figurines of the late Archaic and early Classical period. The excavation in 1991 yielded a) remains of walls made of stones belonging to rooms of still unknown use and b) part of a floor made of small stones. The finds from the destruction layer comprise the usual offerings to the temple, remains of sacrifices and coins, which date to the late 4th century B.C. Their quality and quantity suggest that they come from the sanctuary and therefore, the western part of the peribolos should be located west from the excavational trenches of 1991.
