Evidence on the scene-building of the Hellenistic theatre of Dion

Abstract:
The excavation which took place between 1984 and 1987 at the orchestra and the scene-building of the Hellenistic theatre at Dion, yielded evidence that can be used for the restoration of the scene-building; unfortunately the evidence is scattered, due to the heavy damage of the monument. A retaining-wall supported the earth which was piled for the scene floor, 2.5 m. higher than the level of the orchestra. This wall raised higher than the level of floor and thus, it also constituted the facade of the scene-building, while a marble Doric proscenium was erected in front. The few architectural remains of the proscenium yield evidence for its restoration. The length is 37.84 m. consisting of 19 intercolumniations of 1.784 m. plus two at the comers, reduced by Δ/4, plus two radii of a column base and twice the width of thecomice. The two projections (paraskenia), which flanked the scene-building, were probably built during a second building phase. An oblong building in touch to the rear side of the scene was also probably built in the same period. Two pillars, in touch to the retaining-wall of the scene-building, and symmetrical to the axis of the theatre, supported the wall and protected it from the lateral pushings. However, they also met certain needs of the plays, such as the support of the elevating machine, the incorporation of a staircase, or the formation of the logeion on the roof of the proscenion. If we also consider the existence of a «staircase leading to Charon» which served for the emergence of chthonic deities from the earth, the theatre of Dion, which is related to dramatic games and fairs at the sacred city of the Macedonians, could meet all known from the literary sources needs and tricks.
