Abstract:
A. Excavation at the northern cemetery of ancient Pydna. The excavation of field no. 947 at Makrygialos has been carried out for the third year. 65 more burials were discovered, making the total number 285. The burials date to the Early Iron Age, 5th,4th and early 3rd centuries B.C. Field no. 945, north from 947, was also excavated. 67 graves dating to the Early Iron Age, 5th century and early Hellenistic Period were discovered. Two chamber-tombs, T4 and Til, were the most important discoveries. Tomb 4contained two burials, while Tomb 11 six. These two, and the chamber tomb, discovered at the southern cemetery of Pydna in 1983, are the only samples of this type of Early Iron Age Macedonia. The burials of the 5th century B.C. were all found in pit-graves, while the Hellenistic ones in pit- and cist-graves. B. The burial mounds of Korinos. Two great burial mounds are located NW from Korinos, separated by the highway Athens-Thessaloniki. In 1861 Heuzey discovered the so-called «Macedonian tomb of Pydna» at the mound east from the highway. However, since that time the monument has been filled with earth. Thus, in November we started the excavation of this monument. A relief marble slab from the funerary line (couch) and the marble door of the entrance were found, while the second klineand the door of the entrance to the main chamber had been moved to the Louvre. The investigation of the second mound, located west from the highway, also started. A Macedonian tomb with two chambers, which had been looted in the antiquity, was discovered. It yielded interesting finds, such as the ivory decoration of a wooden kline, bronze greaves and pottery. The tomb dates to the late 4th century B.C.
