Abstract:
The aims of the research at the Table of Toumba of Thessaloniki were the following: a. to prevent illegal excavations. b. to carry out trial trenches at the Table and beyond its boundaries. c. to excavate building-grounds, where archaeological remains had already been discovered. The rescue excavation at the building-ground of 1 Lotos street yielded remains of building activity dated to the 4th and 5th centuries B.C. and layers with Late Bronzeand Early Iron Age finds. The foundation and parts of the walls of two buildings are preserved: the first comprises four small rooms and occupies the major part of the building-ground, while the second is extended to the street; parts of two more rooms are also found. A space, about two metres wide separated the two buildings and probably served as a street. The natural soil of the eastern part of the building-ground contains yellowish clayof good quality; this soil was used in the antiquity. The building-ground is located at the northern-northwestern part of the Table which surrounds the Prehistoric tell; the buildings belong to the Archaic and Classicalcity-plan. Other parts of the same city-plan were discovered in other areas of the Tablein 1985.
