Western cemetery of Thessaloniki : archaeological research on Landadha street in 1991

The results of two rescue excavations, carried out in 1991 at two building-blocks of Langadha street, one across the other, are presented in this paper. Two parts of the western cemetery of Thessaloniki were discovered during the excavation: 134 tile covered graves, cist-graves, vaulted and built-into-the-ground tombs and two burial complexes dated from the 3rd to the 6th century A.D. The portable finds were many and interesting: clay funerary vases, glass phialae, jewellery, coin hoards and coins. A group of three clay funerary stelae originally marking graves of soldiers, which were found in second use in a grave of the 3rd century, and an early Christian wall-painting of the 5th-6th century decorating a grave, were among the most significant finds
