Abstract:
In 1991 the 12th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities carried out a systematic excavation at Paleochora of Maroneia, where part of an interesting mosaic floor had been located in the past. The excavation took place in a field owned by the Ministry of Culture, coveredmore than 600 square metres of the field, and yielded the following results: The mosaic floor dates to the first half of the 6th century AD and belongs to the southern porch of the atrium of an early Christian basilica. The plan of the atrium is an irregular trapezoid. The northern and the southern porches were equipped with mosaic floors, while the central court was paved with marble slabs. The variety and the vitality of the subjects of the mosaics and the technique and quality of the workmanship imply the existence of a monumental basilica. The area was used as a cemetery after the destruction of the basilica, where great number infants and children were buried in cist-graves made of building material from the basilica, pit-graves and graves covered with tiles. A small part of byzantine city of Maroneia was discovered on top of the basilica and the cemetery. A road on the axis of the entrance of the atrium and the basilica, and a street off the main road were located. Houses with hearths, storerooms and courts on both sides of the street were excavated. A two-storeyed building of exceptional construction, location, dimensions, and finds was uncovered north of the road. It is distinguished from the others of the Byzantine city. The stratigraphic examination of the finds, and especially of the pottery and the coins, suggests that the buildings were constantly inhabited between the 10th and the13th centuries
