Abstract:
A peculiar church-shaped building was excavated at Didymoteicho by the 12thEphorate of Byzantine Antiquities in 1990-1991. It is a particularly oblong late Byzantine building with disproportionate plan and elevation, due to its foundation in a group of cut-rock tombs. Three Byzantine building phases and alterations during the period of the Turkish conquest were found in the building. The excavation yielded many fragments of late- and post-Byzantine wall-paintings. Two representations of winged figures, probably emperors, and a written inscription are very interesting. The building was probably originally an imperial foundation, a refectory (Trapeza) of a monastery or a funerary chapel; its later funerary use is obvious, since burial crypts were added in the interior
