The excavational research at ancient Kassandreia and ancient Stageira

In 1990 our archaeological investigation was concentrated on two important cities of Chalcidice, Kassandreia and Stageira. The excavation at ancient Kassandreia, south from Nea Poteidaia, yielded parts of buildings located at three areas: a) we continued the excavation of a public Roman building at «Malta», which had been located the previous year. Two rooms of the building were discovered; they were equipped with mosaic floors imitating marble and were decorated with geometric motives, b) part of a Hellenistic house was found, 1 km south from Nea Poteidaia. Oneroom (2.50x6.50 m.) was excavated only; a gold ring among the finds suggested the industrial character of the building c) a great part of another Hellenistic house came tolight about 200 m. southwest from the above excavation. Its width is 5.5 m. and6.5 m. of its total length was discovered. The plan is temple shaped and its walls were built with the isodomic system. 42 bronze coins were among the finds; 15 of them belong to a hoard. The excavation of ancient Stageira, on the mountainous peninsula «Liotopi» of Olympias started this year. Two trial trenches were carried out, one at each hill. The trench of the western hill (5 x10 m.) yielded two long parallel stone walls of the 5thcentury B.C. According to the context, these belong to a building, probably storeroom or a workshop. The trench of the eastern hill (15x19 m.) was carried out by the steep shore of its northern side. Parts of the Classical and the Hellenistic walls were discovered there. The Classical is straight, and only 16 m. of it have been excavated. The Hellenistic is better preserved, 1.80 m. high, turning three times within this trench; we have uncovered only 33 m. of it.
