A new complex near the Pella Canal

Abstract:
During the 1995 excavational period, a new complex of buildings was uncovered near the modern irrigation canal at Pella. The archaeological data suggest that it maybe identified as a banqueting hall. Such buildings were used in sacred places (such as the Asklepieia at Epidauros, Athens, and Corinth, for instance) in antiquity on major festivals. Prominent citizens and distinguished visitors would gather there to feast and probably to attend certain rituals with a dramatic content. The new complex at Pella is in a part of the city that had public and sacred buildings, including the sanctuary of Darrhon, a local healing god. Inside the building there are a large open space for assemblies, rooms with mosaic floors where meals were taken, the diners reclining on couches, and several facilities for providing water, three cisterns, a smallwell, and some pipes. The building was erected early in the 3rd c. BC, but this area has also yielded pottery from earlier periods, as far back as the early 4th c. BC. The area is thus the core of the first phase of the city as capital and was also the centre of the inhabitants ‘religious activities.
