Abstract:
The excavation of the Neolithic settlement at Makriyalos, Pieria prefecture, continued for the third year. It is a horizontal settlement of a type that is known in the Balkans in general and has recently been located in Macedonia too. The past three years have produced some important data relating to thesettlement’s intracommunal organisation, as also large quantities of finds. Another area from the first phase of the settlement was investigated this year. The large trenches that surround it are one of the most striking aspects of the site. Investigation of these continued, and it was confirmed that their outward side was protected by stone walls. We also investigated some large pits, whose interpretation remains problematic, spaces for everyday use, structures for the preparation of food, and middens. As in previous years, the movable finds were numerous, the most noteworthy including well-burnished vessels, miniature artefacts of clay and oyster shell, figurines preserving information about contemporary clothing, and groups of bone and stone tools. The excavations lasted for three months this year, being halted by bad weather and financial problems.
