Abstract:
In the summer of 1995, excavations at Redina continued in the residential area in the SW area of the castle and in the cemetery in the NW area of the citadel. Eleven houses were excavated. Stratigraphical sections revealed inter esting data for our understanding of the successive phases of the settlement. What we noticed was that, apart from the lower layers, where there was a fair quantity of sherds from the Hellenistic period, the subsequent layers which followed the Justinianian fortification phase of the township contained a layer of graves, not oriented E-W. Later on, in the 9th-10 c., the houses and work shops in the castle that had been repaired in Justinian’s time were built on top of these graves. Many ground-floor buildings were found to have a fireplace and to contain a large number of iron and other objects. This, and the existence of the furnace located at an earlier date, strongly suggests that these were workshops in which iron was forged and also furnaces in which silver was extracted (some fragments of lead monoxide were found). The excavation of the cemetery N and S of the basilica in the citadel yielded 38 graves, many of them superposed. The skeletons no longer survived.Potsherds, fragments of coal, and quicklime were found in the graves.Twenty-six of the graves contained child burials. All the corpses had their head to the E and their hands crossed on their chest. Most of the graves were covered with slabs of schist. The excavation turned up a large number of coins (151), which have not yet been examined; a large number of Byzantine sherds; Neolithic stone tools and amulets in the lower layers; and tools.
