Abstract:
A new project for the development and enhancement of the archaeological site of Europos began in 1992. It included conservation and restoration of the barrel-vaulted tombs, improvement of the access roads, the planting of trees, and the laying of paths through the site. The start of the project saw a number of tasks carried out on the site. Six barrel-vaulted tombs and 22 pit-graves and tile-graves were excavated in the cemetery. The finds from these date to the 4th-6th cc. AD and include an intact glass amphora.A 24 m stretch of a wall of rubble masonry belonging to a building was uncovered on the high ground, but not entirely excavated. The finds included sherds from utilitarian pottery, lumps of iron, and nails. Among the more impressive finds are a head of Dionysos and some clay bunches of grapes.Tile-graves of the 2nd c. AD were discovered on the terraces at the E end of the city.Lastly, the excavations in the Hadzitheodorou and Okaoglou fields were completed, yielding, respectively, a sepulchral structure of rubble stones and a vertical clay pipe which covered a brick-built cist-grave without burial offerings and an intact chest containing a gold wreath, and a desecrated Mace donian tomb with secondary burials.
