The archaeological research in Maroneia and Samothrace in 1995

MaroneiaA trial excavation at the site Kambana , in the centre of the ancient city, ca.330 m. south of the Sanctuary of Dionysos and ca. 450 m. SW of the Theatre, uncovered a large amount of Hellenistic pottery (both black-glaze and plain), roof tiles, terracotta figurines and bronze coins, dating from the last quarter of the 4th till the end of the 3rd century BC. The impressive number of stamped amphora handles (more than 500) originates from various amphora production centres (Thasos, Akanthos, Samothrace, Rhodes, Knidos, Ainos, etc.). In this area a three-aisled basilica and some byzantine cist graves were excavated. Of great importance is the accidental find of an inscription mentioning the cult of Serapis and Isis in Maroneia.SamothraceA small-scale, trial excavation in the Ancient City of Samothrace at a smallflat terrace, strewn with marble fragments, on the slope, a short distance south­ east of the Gattilusi medieval fortification, unearthed a mass of broken archi­ tectural members. The latter come from at least two buildings, one Doric and one Ionic. During the excavation, part of the foundation of a large rectangular building and several fragments of the subgeometric G2/3 ware (first half of the 7th c. BC) were uncovered. Recent survey work of the Ancient City's enclosure wall included the medieval fortification (1431-3) of the Gattilusi, especially its SE tower, in the construction of which many ancient architectural members were used. In the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, research for the improvement of the condition of the remains started, aiming mainly to make them more understandable by the modern visitor, both partially and as a whole. The Ame­ rican School of Classical Studies (Institute of Fine Arts, New York University) continued excavation in the Hall of Choral Dancers and in the neighboring west slope of the Eastern Hill, east of the Hieron.

Μαρώνεια, Σαμοθράκη, συνέδρια

Περιέχεικατόψεις, σχέδια και εικόνες, Στις εργασίες στη Μαρώνεια πήραν μέρος οι αρχαιολόγοι Α. Τσόκα και Ρ. Γουγουσάκη. Με την τοπογραφική αποτύπωση ασχολήθηκαν οι τοπογράφοι Π. Μουζακίδης και Κ. Κλάδου και την αρχιτεκτονική αποτύπωση ο αρχιτέκτονας Δ. Κοτσάκης. Οι φωτογραφικές λήψεις των αντικειμένων είναι του φωτογράφου Σ. Στουρνάρα. Με τη συντήρηση των ευρημάτων ασχολήθηκαν οι συντηρητές της ΕφορείαςΓ. και Ε. Λαϊνίδου. Σημαντική ήταν η συμβολή του φύλακα Μαρώνειας Δ. Βεργίδη και του τεχνίτη Π. Βελτσίδη. Στις εργασίες στη Σαμοθράκη πήραν μέρος η αρχαιολόγος Α. Τσόκα και οι φοιτητές Αρχαιολογικού Τμήματος της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής του ΑΠΘ Ε. Σαμουρκασίδου και Ε. Μαλαδάκης. Με την τακτοποίηση του υλικού ασχολήθηκε στο εργαστήριο ο σπουδαστής Συντήρησης της Σχολής Παστέρ Β. Κότσιαρης. Την αρχιτεκτονική αποτύπωση έκανε ο αρχιτέκτονας Δ. Κοτσάκης, τις φωτογραφικές λήψεις των αντικειμένων ο Σ. Στουρνάρας. Οι εκτυπώσεις των φωτογραφιών του πεδίου είναι του φωτογράφου Σ. Αλεξάνδρου. Θερμές ευχαριστίες οφείλονται στον καθ. J. R.
