Abstract:
The levelling of a low hill at the industrial zone of Drossia of Edessa on June 6th, 1992 yielded sherds, stone tools and pieces of terracotta. The above finds suggested the necessity of a rescue excavation. Firstly, trenches, carried out at the periphery of the hill, defined the boundary of the settlement and yielded chronological evidence. Second, a trial trench was also carried out at the area, where an almost destroyed terracotta floor had been located. One third of the area occupied by the trial trench (12x4 m.) had not been destructed by the bulldozers; however, a layer about 1 m. thick above the surface was missing from the rest. The excavational squares A and B yielded terracotta floor, 0.50 m. deep from the surface. A millstone was found on it, standing on a careless construction made of small stones. The excavation yielded much pottery: among them the most interesting were the spherical pots with thin walls and a red glaze, and the pots with barbotine decoration. Furthermore, three terracotta figurines and a great quantity of stone tools were also found. The preliminary study of the finds implies that the settlement dates to the end of the late Neolithic and the beginning of the middle Neolithic period
