Abstract:
The excavation of the area east from the two northern temples of the sanctuary in 1992 yielded the following:1) The foundation and part of the upper part of a stone altar; the finds, and among them a coin of the Koino of the Hepeirotes, date its use in the late3rd or the early 2nd century B.C.2) A mud-brick «eschara» south from the altar, dated by the finds, and namely a coin struck by Tiberius at Dion in the mid-lst century B.C.A 3rd-century «eschara» had been found in the sanctuary in the past, east from the so-called building with the pits, which consisted of tiles socketed into the ground and an «eschara» under the pronaos of the northern Hellenistic temple made of stones. The movable finds of the destruction layer date it to the Classical period and provide a terminus for the destruction and consequently the foundation of the temple. Finally, the votive offerings to Aphrodite found in the sanctuary, and her relation to Persephone, suggest that Aphrodite was probably worshipped there; the big altar excavated this year is probably connected to her, while the built altars which had come to light in 1990 are associated with the worship other Eleusinian deities
