Abstract:
The excavation at M. Pasales’ building ground (no. 25, BB 3) was completed; meanwhile the excavation at G. Lazarides’ building ground (no. 9,BB2) started. The above building grounds are located in the plain west from the mound with the Medieval castle of Vrya. M. Pasales’ building ground (no. 25, BB3).A complex of buildings was discovered; these date to three main building phases, except for some evidence of earlier undated constructions. Part of a bath with a mosaic floor decorating one of its outdoors rooms. The bath was probably built in the 2nd century A.D. and was used, having undergone some alterations, until the 4th or 5th century A.D. During the second building phase, a huge building with massive walls and careful construction, which was used as store rooms or shops, was built on top of the bath in the early Christian period (5th-6th century). This building, which also occupied the neighbouring building grounds, underwent an alteration in the middle Byzantine period: its rooms were subdivided into smaller ones, probably used as residence. This last building phase ended in the early10th century, according to the evidence provided by a hoard of coins. G. Lazarides’ building ground (no. 9, BB2).Remains of middle Byzantine buildings were found in G. Lazarides’ building ground; these probably functioned as storehouse, or workshops, or stables, as the other buildings which had been located there in the past. After the destruction of the building the area was used as a cemetery for along period, after the late 12th or early 13th century. Thus, the settlement was deserted in the 13th century and habitation probably continued in the fortified castle of Vrya, on the mound
