Identity criteria of abstract objects
Author:
Abstract:
This paper deals with some currently discussed issues concerning identity criteria of abstract objects. It endorses Lowe’s view that objects are those entities that satisfy certain identity conditions. It examines various formulations of identity criteria among which, Hale’s proposal for a certain form that avoids circularity. Then it focuses on a certain kind of identity criteria of abstract objects, broadly discussed, namely abstraction principles. Abstraction principles recarve the content of equivalence relations and reformulate them into identity statements. The paper addresses the question whether abstraction principles enjoy the status of definition and concludes that they are non-eliminative implicit Definitions. Then it takes under consideration the problem of incompatible criteria of identity as it emerges in case of some 2nd order abstraction principles. After a critical appraisal of the neofregean attempt to address this issue, it offers a different account that is based on a plenitudinous model-theoretic ontology
