Contemporary critiques of liberalism : the problem of equality and political participation

Abstract:
The article is a critical presentation of contemporary critiques of liberal views on citizenship. While liberal theories start from a distinction between the public and the private sphere and understand equality as a presupposition of political activity, contemporary «republican» critiques of liberal citizenship see politics, practiced in a community of common meanings, as the most valuable human activity. The article argues that «republicanism»^ priority of politics may endanger freedom and privacy. Contemporary social conditions call for a conception of liberal politics which takes claims of equality into account and understands such claims as a presupposition of political participation. Liberal citizenship gives way to the freedom of the individual to choose conceptions of the good life other than politics
