Abstract:
The site of Dispilio in Kastoria, after two decades of research, has been broadly acknowledged as a Neolithic excavation. However, a defending wall, a church and some surface finds belonging to later periods, prove that the site had been in continuous use for a long time after the Neolithic. During the last few years a stone enclosure, shreds and other finds belonging to the Bronze Age, the Early Iron Age and the historic periods were unearthed. In 2008 we started excavating the South section of the site where Late Bronze Age unstratified shreds were found in the past. At the end of the excavation season, we had uncovered layers of different material culture compared to those found in Dispilio until then. Pottery, tools and metal objects and the finds in general, have given us the impression of phases dating in the Early Bronze Age. Though, we have to wait for the thorough study of pottery and the absolute dating results. If our preliminary excavation impressions are correct then it is the first time that were digging in Dispilio human layers dating in a period after the Neolithic. This is quite important for the research on the area because it places Dispilio on the map of the Bronze Age sites in Western Macedonia.
