Old engagements and new finds at Aegae
Abstract:
In August 2008 a remarkable find was revealed in the Sanctuary of Eukleia at the agora of Aegae. In the fill of a still difflcult-to-interpret construction, that constituted of a large ditch (8.05χ8.55χ1.50 m) and well cut poros blocks at regular intervals, an outstanding burial came to light: a bronze vessel that contained a golden pyxis with cremated bones and a gold oak wreath, similar to the one discovered in the “Tomb of the Prince” in the Great Tumulus. The potsherds found in the fill belong to a wide chronological range, from the Early Iron Age to the end of the 4th c. BC, whereas the building phase above is dated to the 3rd c. BC. Therefore, the filling and annihilation of the construction should be dated to the end of the 4th c. The special features of the assemblage (valuable items that reflect a higher, almost first rate, status and the careful collection of the bones) indicate the burial of a member of the royal family. Taking into consideration: a. the dating of the fill to the end of the 4th c. BC, b. the results of the osteoarchaeological examination, which identifies a young male of 15-18 years and c. the literary evidence reporting on the assassination of the two sons of Alexander the Great, one cannot exclude the possibility that the burial is connected with the violent end of the Temenid house.
