Abstract:
The golden pyxis inside the bronze cist discovered in 2008 at the agora of Aegae contained an impressive golden wreath, bones intermingled with a mass of plant material and water. The methodology which was adopted in the laboratory in order to preserve and investigate the waterlogged content included preventive measures, a thorough microexcavation, conservation, meticulous examination and analysis of the contained materials. The important information acquired throughoutthe whole process resulted in the following preliminary conclusions: The assemblage constitutes a burial of a young man 15-18 years old who was cremated in high temperature soon after his death. His bones were wrapped in a purple cloth partly interwoven with golden fibers and were deposed inside the golden vessel. In the recent past, water infiltrated the vessel and permitted the development of roots of wild herbs causing damages to the content.
