Abstract:
During 2008, the 16th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities contacted archaeological work for the construction of the Thessaloniki METRO at the stations “New Railway Station”, “Sintrivani”, “Panepistimio” and “Eukleides”. Seven hundred and thirty-eight (738) tombs, dated in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, were excavated, all of which are part of the western and eastern cemeteries of the ancient town, in addition to four ceramic kilns and other fragmentary architectural elements. The excavation data confirm the topographical elements of ancient Thessaloniki in these regions, already known from earlier excavation researches of the Ephorate.
