Abstract:
In the wider area of Thessaloniki, defined on the west by the SW tower of the Byzantine fortification (Pyrgos tou Anaglyfou) and on the east by the Freedom Square (Plateia Eleutherias), during previous excavations at the building plot of Dodekanissou str„ 2 and Branduna str. were found store - house complexes. Simultaneously, during the salvage excavations at the bordering plots of Moskof str., 18 und Danaidon str., 3, were revealed five parallel stylobates of 31 m. length and 4.30 m. width, on which were alternated rectangular and cross-shaped pessaries made of bricks, and connected to the upper roof with arches.During a recent excavation, held on the building plot of Frangon str., 28, was revealed a large part of a public building of the 6th c. This building had strong walls of concrete and tiles, and a floor paved with opus sectile, which continues under the bordering plot. This building was abandoned (or destroyed) after the conquest of the town by the Sarakins at 904; on its ruins, during the Middle Byzantine Period, were established workshops with dumps of metallurgy. In the Latter Byzantine Period there was installed a ceramics’ workshop; from the latter were found some walls and the refuse-dump of the faulty shoddy vessels. Among these vessels are also included imitations of the mayolica - type vases. In the last phase, which is dated at the Turkish Period, 13 wells were constructed in the plot, the construction of which is probably connected with the rise of the hydrophore horizon.
