Abstract:
The archeological site is part of a block of the ancient Thessaloniki, including part of the street and three habitations dating back to the 4th-6th c„ disposing atrium, cistern and laboratories of the byzantine era. The houses’ pavements are decorated with opus cectile and mosaics. Antiquities were revealed during the excavation for the foundation of an elementary school (1992). The new architectural plan incorporated the revealed antiquities. The outer walls of the ancient houses were partly destroyed because of the construction of the upper building. The conservation of the existing walls was included joint fillings and completion of the ruined masonries up to the decorated pavement’s level. A team of conservators fixed the opus cectile, mosaics and their beds.Parts of the mural paintings were removed for provisional safeguarding and they have been replaced in situ. Architectural and decorative marble parts are being exhibited inside the archeological site.A video, presenting the history of the city and the inhabitation in it, is prepared for elementary school pupils visiting the site.
