Abstract:
The investigation of space Z ' of the Sevasteion complex was completed in the summer of 2008, when the excavation of two more adjacent rooms began to the south, spaces H' and Θ'.Space Z', whose excavation had begun in 2007, communicates with the previously excavated Space ΣΤ ' (for the first time attested in the complex) with an entrance located on their shared wall, which had a built threshold. The main difference of this room, (5.30 m x 6.20 m) was the inward setback of its back wall by 2 m which results to a decrease in width. Another difference is that there is no wall at the façade, but an elaborate stylobate (4.5m long), made of five, unequal in size, marble blocks. An impressive built pedestal for statues, was found running along the whole of the back wall, 1.10 m in height and 0.80m in width, which was placed on top of a protruding base. This, as well as the small finds from the room (statues or parts of statues) indicate a peculiar construction, which in the form of a stoa’ could easily be identified as the “Exedra” mentioned in the votive inscription found in 2006. According to that, the Exedra was built for the city by Arridaios, Kotys and Sopatros.Regarding the investigation of the complex’s two following spaces (H and Θ), they were only investigated partially, with two respective cuts (4 x 4 m). As yet, space H revealed part of the façade wall, another impressive, earlier (Hellenistic) wall, as well as, three thinner and apparently later walls and a refuse pit containing fine black- glazed pottery and “west slope” sherds. The next space, Θ, has not yet revealed any architectural remains but offered important small finds, among which were two plain clay lamps, a real-size calf of a statue wearing calceus patricii (possibly an emperors statue), as well as a headless statue of a nude adolescent cupbearer, of exceptional art.Of the excavations other finds, it is worth mentioning a number of iconistic and architectural sculpture members, a small trapezoid marble plaque with relief palmettes and lotus leaves, as well as coins, a silver dinar of the Roman Republican Era bearing the inscription C. Naevious Balbus, dating to 79 BC.
