Abstract:
During the 1989 excavation at Iria on Naxos a clay double stamp was found in a non stratified deposit containing pottery which ranged from LG to the Early Hellenistic times. Its shape is unique among the stamps and seals known so far: the main part of it can be compared to the marble rectangular LG seals, but its upper, smaller side is elongated to form a stem, perforated horizontaly in mid-height, so as to hang from a string. The larger stamping surface bears the representation of a lion walking to the right, while on the smaller surface there is a winged horse. Both are in concave relief. The clay double stamp is dated to the early second quarter of the 7th century on stylistic grounds, since it cannot be dated by context. It is suggested that it served for the decoration of relief pottery, before having been dedicated to the Naxian sanctuary by the potter to whom it belonged. A second possible use for it, was the stamping of roof tiles, an assumption made on the ground of similar shape and subject with some impressions on early Laconian and Corinthian roof tiles from southern Greece, the Peloponnese, Aigina and Samos.
