The aqueduct of Kavala : the night lighting

Abstract:
The aqueduct of Kavala, commonly known as “Ka- mares”, is part of an extensive water supply system about 6 km north of the town.In order to show off the monument by illuminating it, approval had been given to a lighting study that provided for the installation of a system of linear luminaires and floodlights on the monument itself. The current archaeological data, however, do not permit this study to be implemented. For this reason a new lighting design has been approved, which provides for the installation of floodlights on poles along the length of the aqueduct, at some distance away from it.This solution will not only avoid any harm to the monument but will also show off its architectural features in the best possible way, in the way that natural lighting does. The appearance and the setting off the aqueduct of Kavala via night lighting, is a quite complicated problem, provided that many factors are involved at this subject. In the proposal of the night lighting there have beentaken into account the following:• The international regulations.• The illuminance and the luminance in the departments of the monuments, the colour of stones and the reflection factor of the structural materials.• The color temperature (° K) and the color rendering index (CRI) of luminaries.• The minimize of the glare.• The use of floodlights on poles has been recommended for the lighting of the monument. To achieve the best possible visual effect, it is proposed that the monument should be used HQI (Metal Halide) lamps with color temperature 4200° K and with (CRI) Ra = 85. The luminance on the surface of the monument should range between 2.5-3.2 cd/m2 and the illumination between 30-40 lx.
