Parallel Title:
Neogene mamalian remains from Dikaia (Evros, Thrace, Greece)
Abstract:
New mammalian findings in Dikaia (N: 41° 42,055’ and E: 026° 17,21 Γ), Evros Prefecture, tentatively dated more than 5 million years ago, have been unearthed while digging to build a gradient road linking the region with the Via Egnatia Highway. The work on the road was immediately discontinued and the Komotini Antiquities Ephorate and the Northern Greece Ephorate of Paleoanthropology and Speleology in co-operation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Geology conducted further excavation and studies. The about 45 fossil fragments, found scattered in the sandy sediments, came from prehistoric mammals and wood, as well. Few of them showed intense marks that were rolled due to water action. In addition to the first tusk fragment, three upper tusk fragments, two lower molars and bone fragments of proboscideans can be attributed to the mastodont Choerolophodon pentelici; four teeth, two astragali, tibia and bone fragments of small-sized horses to Hipparion cf. macedonicum and a mandible fragment of a medium sized bovid to cf. Tragoportax. The material, even though poor, can indicate, mainly by the proboscidean, an age of Late Miocene (5-15 Ma). It is significant that mammalian remains are not common in this east-northernmost part of Greece.
