Subsistence strategies during the 4th millennium : report on the archaeological site on the east bank of river Anghitis

Abstract:
From the excavations at the Source of Anghitis Cave, it has been ascertained that during the 4th millennium, groups practicing transhumant pastoralism used a recess in the south walls of the rock on the left bank of the river Angitis. They formed a small flat area measuring 10x12 m approximately, which was divided into two small levels. The only structures which have been identified were four hearths, two on each level, made from rough stones place rudely fashioned into circle. Ash and charcoal were found in and around the hearths as pottery (open vessel shapes, jars, monochrome sherds with plastic -rope- decoration or incised decoration, graphite painted ware), animal residues, chipped stone (scraper, piercer), polished stone (adze) and bone (piercer) tools as well as jewellery made of seashells and a canine tusk.
