The boundaries and urban development of ancient Argilos : new data from a salvage excavation at Sykia Lakkou, Nea Kerdyllia
Abstract:
Over the last two years, the 28th Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Serres has carried out a salvage excavation on a plot of land at Sykia Lakkou, Nea Kerdyllia, east-south-east of the Argilos hill, at a point that we had hitherto believed to have been outside the city of Argilos. However, the investigations uncovered parts of three large oblong buildings lying parallel on a north-south axis and separated by two stone-paved streets. The clearest picture emerged from the excavation of the middle building, which is also the most fully investigated and has a ground plan suggesting that it was a house with a pastas. On the basis of the portable finds (pottery and coins), the excavated buildings have been dated to c. the mid-5th c. BC and were abandoned in the first half of the 4th c. BC. These new archaeological data support the working hypothesis that, while the hill is the nucleus of the city and was inhabited continuously from when the colony was founded, the city acquired a new sector to the south-east in the 5th c. BC, laid out on the Hippodamean grid system. The boundaries and the form of this sector will have to be investigated more thoroughly in the future.
