Abstract:
Although the roles Plautus and Terence present in their comedies are almost the same, and they generally employ the same methods in presenting their characters, it is most obvious that Plautus delights in exaggerating his characters and stressing their weaknesses and faults for the purpose of farcical humour, whereas Terence, avoiding farcical roles, is highly interested in presenting decent and serious persons, who may be closer to reality and truth than Plautus’ characters, but, non the less, they are devoid of Plautus’ dramatic power. At a parallel level, Terence can also display a perceptiveness, which penetrates deeply into the human soul and is in fact lacking in Plautus. On the other hand, dramatic characters like Plautus’ Euclio, Ballio and Pyrgopolyni- ces are definitely unique in ancient drama.
