Abstract:
An unknown cemetery of the Early Christian period was excavated by the 16th Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities on the Via Egnatia, immediately to the north of the village of Megali Volvi, Thessaloniki prefecture. A total of 118 burials were located and investigated, of which 102 were in cist-graves constructed with vertically positioned pieces of slate, 6 were in cist-graves built with rubble masonry, and 10 were in pit-graves. All were covered with slabs of slate and were constructed in the soft, sandy subsoil. Fifteen per cent of the graves contained cremations. The cemetery had been looted in the ancient period. Even so, enough grave goods survived to permit dating: clay vessels (4 oinochoes and 1 lamp), 62 bronze coins, bronze jewellery, and 30 beads. Apart from the grave goods, 64 charred fruits were found in one grave. Two stone buildings with a NW-SE orientation and an entrance in the SE side were investigated on the SE edge of the site. The north building survives better, measuring 8x10 m and with walls 0.60-0.90 m thick surviving to a maximum height of 1.36 m. It is divided into three rooms of unequal size, of which the middle, smallest, one supported a wooden ladder. The south building, with external dimensions of 6x11 m, lies 7.50 m to the SW. The walls, 0.65 m thick and surviving to a maximum height of 1.10 m, form two rooms 4.50 m square. Here too the entrance is in the SE side with a 2.90 m opening. Access to the second room is through an opening of the same size. There are 15 pits dug in the soft, sandy subsoil of the floor, and the building was probably a storeroom (pitheon).
