New evidence for mycenean Attica

The research on Mycenaean Attica has started already from the 19th century. Nevertheless, as the finds have not been published, the picture thus obtained was only fragmentary.The recent publications of the material from the area of the bay of Varkiza have contributed to the re-evaluation of our knowledge of this region: There existed settlements dated from the end of the Middle / the beginning of the Late Bronze Age (Citadel at Kiapha Thiti) until the middle of the 12th century BC (Cemetery of Varkiza / Vari). The finds attest links and contacts not only with sites on mainland Greece, but also with the Aegean in general, Crete and even the eastern Mediterranean, a fact possibly due to the early exploitation of Laurion.

Το κείμενο αυτό παρουσιάστηκε στο Επιστημονικό Συμπόσιο που διοργανώθηκε από τον Τομέα Αρχαιολογίας και Ιστορίας της Τέχνης της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, 3 και 4 Απριλίου 1996, με θέμα, «Ανασκαφή και Μελέτη: Πρόσφατες Εξελίξεις της Έρευνας σε θέματα Αρχαιολογίας και Ιστορίας της Τέχνης στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών». Δεν δίδονται εικόνες αντικειμένων και τοπογραφικά σχέδια, διότι πρόκειται για υλικό είτε δημοσιευμένο (Βάρκιζα, Κιάφα Θήτη, εν μέρει Βουρβάτσι), ή που πρόκειται να παρουσιασθεί (Βουρβάτσι)
