Nea Kallikratia 2005 : excavations in the east cemetery of the ancient settlement
Abstract:
In 2005 the salvage excavation was carried out in the east cemetery of the ancient settlement. Burials from the Early Iron Age to late antiquity were investigated. Typo- logically the graves are represented by all the types known in the wider area (poros sarcophagi, pit-graves covered with stone or wood, jar burials, tile-graves, funeral pyres, and built cist-graves). The earliest burials are accompanied by grave goods chiefly in the form of locally produced clay vessels. The burials of the Late Archaic and Classical periods are represented by well-dated sealed assemblages of vessels and coin hoards. The discovery of another bronze coin of the Dikaiopolitai in a grave of the 1st half of the 4th c. BC further supports the hypothesis that the third Eretrian colony was in the Thermaic Gulf,'at Nea Kallikratia in Halkidiki.
