Abstract:
This article presents a rough picture of the sculpture that we hope to find in the ancient town of Oiniadai, where an excavation is in progress since 1989 by the University of Athens. This small female marble head is the sole sculptural item that has been found up to now in this ancient town. The great corrosion makes it difficult to reach definite conclusions. However the coiffure of the statuette is met on statues of Artemis as well as on presentations of Artemis on the stamps of the town of Kallipolis in Aetolia. These stamps represent the type of the statue of Laphria Artemis in Calydon of Aetolia, made of gold and ivory. Furthermore, the calm and fine characteristics of the face are reminiscent of Artemis in Larnaca of Cyprus, which is a work of Praxiteles’ son.On the basis of the above correlations we conclude that the small head may probably belong to a statuette of goddess Artemis and we date it at the end of the 4th century B.C., the period of Aetolian domination at Oiniadai.
