Until this year there were very few wares of the Early Archaic period from Akan- thos attributed to the workshops around the head of the Thermaic Gulf. The ‘silvered’ amphora, the Subprotogeometric amphora, and the rare amphora with double handles, as also the sipye, are very important examples of the painted pottery produced by the workshops of the Thermaic Gulf. Also, the unpainted burnished wares, like the hydria for example, reflect a different tradition from the same area.In the Archaic period there are also quite a lot of imports from the nearby Tha- sian workshops.The local output of the Akanthian pottery workshops differs considerably. In some cases they imitate the products of Thasos, but the majority are distinguished by clear influences from eastern Ionia and the islands, as attested by the ‘Chalkidikean’ hydrias, the small amphoras with band decoration, and the smaller vessels, as for instance one-handled cups and phiale-shaped vessels.
