Abstract:
From literary, epigraphical and numismatic sources 378 Roman names of Lesbos were collected, 167 of which belonged to ingenui and 164 to Greek Lesbians with Roman citizenship; for the rest 4 7 names it is not certain whether they refer to ingenui or Greek Lesbians. These Roman citizens bear 104 gentilicia of which 55 belonged to ingenui and 42 to Greek Lesbians, while for the rest 7 it is impossible to determine to whom they belonged. The above mentioned Roman names of Lesbos can be classified to these two categories, the ingenui and the Lesbians with Roman citizenship.Regarding the ingenui, three primary questions are attempted to be answered: 1) When they first made their appearance at the island 2) What were their relations with the native Greek population and 3) When their presence on the island finally ends.Concerning the Lesbians who bear Roman names, effort was made to determine the Roman officials who granted them the Roman civitas. This, however, proved to be quite difficult, because only in a few cases became possible to ascertain the Roman official, while in others the matter was more or less of conjecture and for the most cases quite impossible.Accordingly, the 42 gentes of the Greek Lesbians are divided into three groups. Every gens is examined separately with its main representatives and the offices they held in Lesbos or abroad. This, however, prosopographical part of our research will be published in a forthcoming article.
