Abstract:
The cave “Piges Koromilias” is located in a steep gorge 9 km west of the town of Kastoria, at a height of 850 m above the sea level. The cave, 26.40x8 m size, develop a sediment depth no more than 1,50m in the northern and deepest squares. The stratigraphic sequence (disturbed superficial layers, successive grey, red -clay masses- and black layers representing fire remains of sheep and goat coprolithes for sanitary purposes, mixed layers and yellow-brown water-lain sediments, layers without human traces, situated mainly in the entrance of the cave) as well as the pottery sherds revealed an occupation from the last centuries of the 6th millennium BC. The cave could have been used to pen animals but could also be used as shelter for humans. The shapes of the vessels, the monochrome vessels with slipped ware which amount more than 40% of the pottery, the black-burnished or the decorated -painted and applied decoration- sherds show similarities with the pottery found in Neolithic sites in the vicinity, that is the Kastoria, Korcë and Eordaia basins, the Pelagonia plain or the Aliakmon valley. Sporadic occupation continued until the Byzantine era. The C14 dates would confirm or reject our suppositions.
