Abstract:
«Orpheus’s Cave» at Alistrati, Serres prefecture, is in the area of Petroto at the south-east end of the Menikio range, 1.5 km from the developed cave of Alistrati. These are the two most important caves in this karstic system. The first excavation yielded Neolithic and Early Bronze Age pottery, bones of domesticated animals and small mammals, shells, bone tools, clay spindle whorls, and a few flint artefacts. Among the most important finds are two pieces of human skulls, while a noteworthy find made near the south wall of the cave is the postholes in the floor. Their function is still under investigation, but they very probably define a separate space. Further investigation and analysis of all the archaeological material will make it possible to confirm hypotheses and offer a more definite interpretation of what the cave was used for.
