Abstract:
This study is a comparative presentation of three relatively recent general studies on roman history: Colin Wells’ The Roman Empire2 (Glasgow 1992), Peter Garnsey’s and Richard Sailer’s The Roman Empire. Economy, Society and Culture (Berkeley/Los Angeles 1987) and Andrew W. Lintott’s Imperium Romanum. Politics and Administration (London/New York 1993). It stresses the differences in concept, theory and presentation between the three works and the fact that, because of these differences, they are “complementary rather than competing” visions of the realities of the Roman Empire.
