Nea Kallikratia 2004 : the excavations in the cemetery of the ancient settlement
Abstract:
The salvage excavation conducted at Nea Kallikratia, Halkidiki, in 2004 concentrated on two building plots on the east hill, where 120 and 13 burials were investigated respectively, dating to the period between the Early Iron Age and Late Antiquity. This part of the ancient cemetery developed in two phases: during the Persian Wars and in the 4th c. AD. The Late Archaic burials, which account for the greater proportion of the graves investigated and which yielded the most grave goods (mainly Athenian pottery and koroplastics), are inhumations and cremations. The condition of the terrain, as also the social circumstances in association with the burial customs, made it possible for the cemetery to be organised in family groups going back consistently to the distant ancestral past, which is represented by the earliest Archaic burials. The Late Geometric section of the cemetery is on the edge of the east hill and further away from the settlement on the telland the table.
