Abstract:
The salvage excavation at ancient Aphytis brought to light parts of three dwellings at the junction of two roads that cross at right angles. Each house consisted of many small and large rooms communicating with each other through small openings and a hearth in the middle of one large rectangular room. Two of the houses (A and B) preserve stone thresholds. A clay bath survives in house B. The destruction fill inside the houses contained many objects that had fallen to the floor because of a sudden natural disaster (earthquake), which has been dated to the end of the 4th c. BC.Built in an area that had not previously been residential, the houses belong to a north-westward and westward extension of the urban tissue of the ancient city, which had originally been confined to Koutsomylo Hill. The extension may have been constructed in the 4th c. BC and there is evidence that it was built on the Hippodamean grid system.
