Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate Virgil’s adoption of an etymological pattern alreadey found in Homer and continued in Apollonius Rhodius. According to this pattern there may be etymological connections between a simile and its tenor, organised around a (proper) name. These etymological relations expand the literary space of the narrative and often reveal or highlight elements which function parallel to the main point of comparison. The acknowledgment of this pattern offers the possibility of detecting a greater number of etymologies than those already known in the Roman epic.
